Selling online is no longer optional for many Indian businesses. But before you add your first product, you need to choose where your store will live. The three most common choices are WooCommerce, Shopify and a custom-built store. Each is the “best e-commerce platform in India” for a different kind of business.
Quick comparison
| WooCommerce | Shopify | Custom store | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small–medium stores wanting control | Fast launch, minimal tech work | Unique workflows, B2B, large catalogues |
| Running costs | Hosting + optional plugins | Monthly subscription + app fees | Hosting + maintenance |
| Ownership & control | Full | Limited to Shopify’s rules | Full |
| Indian payment gateways | Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and more via plugins | Supported through Shopify and partner gateways | Any gateway with an API |
| Flexibility | High | Medium | Unlimited |
WooCommerce: flexible and fully yours
WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress website into an online store. You own everything — the code, the data and the design — and it runs on your own hosting.
- Good: huge range of extensions, strong content and blogging features for SEO, no per-sale platform fees.
- Watch out for: you are responsible for hosting, security updates and backups. Too many plugins slow a store down.
Shopify: quick to launch, easy to run
Shopify is a hosted service: you pay a monthly fee and Shopify handles servers, security and updates.
- Good: very fast to set up, reliable, easy for non-technical teams.
- Watch out for: subscription and app costs add up over time, and you have less control over how things work. Check current plan prices and transaction charges on Shopify’s site before deciding.
Custom-built store: when off-the-shelf doesn’t fit
A custom store is built specifically for your business. It makes sense when you have requirements the big platforms struggle with, for example:
- Wholesale and retail pricing for different customer groups.
- Integration with your existing billing, inventory or ERP software.
- Made-to-order products with complex options, such as printing jobs.
- Very large catalogues or unusual checkout rules.
It costs more to build, but there are no platform limits and no monthly subscription.
Things every Indian online store needs
- Local payment options — UPI, cards, net banking and wallets through a gateway like Razorpay or PayU.
- GST-ready invoices with correct HSN codes and tax breakdowns.
- Shipping integration with courier aggregators for live rates and tracking.
- Cash on delivery controls to reduce fake orders, such as OTP confirmation.
- Mobile-first design, because most Indian shoppers buy on their phones.
- A clear returns and refund policy — it builds trust and is required by payment gateways.
Our recommendation
If you want full ownership and good SEO, start with WooCommerce. If you need to launch this week with minimal technical work, Shopify is a strong choice. If your business has special pricing, production or integration needs, a custom store will serve you better for years.
